Class Act:Taking Red Ribbon Week To The Top
JACKSON COUNTY- Each year in October students in Illinois participate in Red Ribbon Week.
It's a time to learn the benefits of living drug free. At the end of the week students at one Murphysboro school decided to send their goals skyward.
McElvain School is seeing red and with a symbolic gesture students sending their dreams and goals as high as possible.
School social worker Andrea Mendenhall says, "They have dreams and goals just like any other kid in any other school and they need to know they can achieve those goals by being drug free, that is a great way for those dreams to happen."
Each student received a red balloon with a note card tied to it. Written on the card was something the student wanted to accomplish.
With the help of being drug free. Like graduating high school or starting a career in their field of choice, "If you don't pay attention to drugs and stay in school, you can accomplish anything" says 8th grader Omar Tinsley.
From young to old... Being drug free at McElvain is important, and the students are embracing it,"We got a lot of little kids in this school, younger kids and try to tell them stay off drugs, they ain't good for ya"
says Senior Jewlious Causey.
At the actual balloon launch it was all smiles and teachers hope the kids will understand that their dreams can soar to new heights if they are drug free.
