October Crime Increases in Carbondale
JACKSON COUNTY --
Carbondale police say the month of October brought a spike in crime to the city.
Police are now stepping up patrols trying to curb the trend.
Carbondale Police Chief Jody O'Guinn says there have been thirty more home burglaries this year compared to last.
The department has also seen a spike in armed robberies.
Authorities say the economy may be to blame.
Police say most of the crime is occuring in the Arbor District; a central part of Carbondale near the SIU campus where many students live.
SIU student Matthew Cutinello has seen the crime increase first hand.
He was robbed at gun point on College Street while walking to class.
"I don't really think of Carbondale as that scary of a place. I would
think crime would be back in the woods or something, not in front of everything like around here," said Cutinello.
Police have arrested
Kristopher Cash, 20, of Carbondale, for robbing Cutinello.
Authorities say they have increased numbers of uniformed cops combing the streets as well as undercover officers.
The overtime is expected to continue through November.
