Eight straight is great for SIU

CARBONDALE — The Softball Salukis continued their torrid play, beating Evansville 6-3 to run their winning streak to eight.

Freshman Ashley Wood homered, and senior Brianna Jones went the distance in the circle for her 81st career win.  That ties Jones with Cassidy Scoggins for second on SIU’s all-time wins list, three behind Amy Harre for the top spot.

Megan Brown singled in pinch runner Meredith Wernig to get the scoring started in the second inning.  Evansville answered a half inning later as Halie Fain drove in Allison Daggett to tie the game.

In the bottom of the third, Wood clubbed her team-leading seventh home run, a three-run shot, to put SIU in front to stay.  Wood also leads the team with 35 runs batted in.

Jenny Jansen followed with a single, and Katelyn Massa chased her home with a ringing double into right center for a 5-1 SIU lead.

Each team scored a run in the fourth.  Evansville added a single tally in the seventh on an RBI ground out by former Nashville Hornette Mackenzie McFeron.  Jones then got Eryn Gould to fly out to end it.

The Salukis improve to 21-9, 6-3 in the MVC.  The Aces fall to 12-20, 2-7 in the Valley.

The teams will play a doubleheader Saturday.  The first game is scheduled for noon.  It will be the team’s annual Donate Life Green Up game to raise awareness for organ donation.
