Groenewegen’s gem helps Wild salvage split

MARION — After dropping game one of their doubleheader to the Aussie Peppers, Sara Groenewegen struck out 12 on her way to a one-hit shutout to lead the Canadian Wild of Southern Illinois to split.

The Wild got going early in game two.  Holly Speers’ two-out, two-run, bases loaded single in the bottom of the first put the Wild in front to stay.

That turned out to be more than enough for Groenewegen, who lost a no-hit bid on Tarni Stepto’s two-out triple in the sixth.

The Peppers won game one 4-1.  The teams will wrap up their series Thursday night at 6:35.
