CARBONDALE — The SIU Football team closed the first week of practice with the first scrimmage of training camp.
The first full contact of camp came in the form of a 100-plus play scrimmage at Saluki Stadium.
All three quarterbacks vying for the starting spot–Nick Baker, Kare` Lyles and Stone Labanowitz–all saw action, with varying degrees of success and struggles.
The standout of the day was junior defensive end Chucky Sullivan, who spent most of the day in the offensive backfield.
"I’m a very big energy person, so it’s hard for me in practice to slow down knowing we’re not tackling," said Sullivan. "So the moment we get to really let it out and go, it’s all gas and no brake for me. I think it’s the same for everybody else. Everybody enjoyed it. Everybody was in it, just ready to go. We wanted to get that first hit–get the pads hitting. It’s kinda hard to play football, running around and two-hand touch each other."
SIU’s season opener is in three weeks, at Southeast Missouri State August 29th.
