‘Sesame Street’ turns 50

(WSIL) — It was nearly 50 years ago that “Sesame Street” premiered on public television stations nationwide. On November 10, 1969 children’s programming was changed, and hasn’t seen as significant an impact made since.

Produced by Sesame Workshop, “Sesame Street” has been a way to introduce children to social skills and a multi-cultural world they may not see in their own neighborhoods. It has helped to educate several generations of children by using muppets and music, as well as the occasional celebrity guest.

In 2015, new episodes of “Sesame Street” moved to HBO, but the show continued to air repeats on PBS following their cable run.

HBO will celebrate the show’s golden milestone with “Sesame Street’s 50th Anniversary Celebration,” airing Saturday at 7 p.m., and repeating Nov. 17 on PBS.
