DU QUOIN (WSIL) — The Du Quoin Indians welcomed defending state champ Monticello to town Saturday for a Class 3A game.
In the first quarter, the Indians send a high snap over Alex Zimmerman’s head. Zimmerman tries to kick the ball away, but it is smothered by the Sages and they come away with a safety.
Monticello has an early 5-0 lead.
First play of the second quarter, the Sages’ Nic Tackles rolls out and finds a wide open Spencer Brown for the 37 yard touchdown pass.
Monticello is rolling early on, but Du Quoin would have an answer. Down at the 6-yard line, Zimmerman throws a low ball but it’s caught by Wade Roberson for the touchdown.
Indians still trailing 12-7.
After a defensive stand, the Indians take it right back down field before halftime. Zimmerman with the play action finds Braeden Pursell for the 8-yard score.
Du Quoin takes a 14-12 lead and hold on to win a thriller — 28-25 the final.
Du Quoin moves into Round 2 with a record of 9-and-1.
The Indians will face Williamsville next. The Number 2 seed had little trouble with St. Joe Ogden, winning 54-26.
