HERRIN (WSIL) -- Hundreds made their way to the 5th annual 'Christmas on the Streets' in Herrin Saturday.

The event is a toy giveaway organized by the Loft Church and neighbors with the simple goal of giving back and helping the community.

The event is specifically aimed at providing toys for kids around the holidays; however, coats, shoes, and bathing items are also available for those that would benefit from them.

Josh Adkins, Pastor of Loft Church, says that his favorite part is hearing the genuine 'thank you' from the ones that he knows it's really helping...

"One of the most precious things is just hearing something like, 'We didn't have any extra money this Christmas season' or 'We weren't able to have the Christmas we wanted for our children, so thank you so much for allowing us to have that.' And you know, that's what touches our heart. We want people to feel love - just ultimately why we do it: compassion."

Organizers say actions for next year are already underway - with plans to begin gathering items starting as soon as the day after Christmas.
