SPRINGFIELD (ILLINOIS CAPITOL BUREAU) -- The Illinois Senate will have a new president on Sunday. Lawmakers are already backing two candidates for the leadership role.
Senators Kimberly Lightford (D-IL) 4th District and Don Harmon (D-IL) 39th District are both veterans in the chamber. Lightford currently serves as the Senate Majority Leader, while Harmon is the Assistant Majority Leader.
If Lightford is elected, she would be the first woman to serve as the Illinois Senate President.
Current President John Cullerton (D-IL) 6th District will resign from his role in order to vote in the election. This will be his last action on the Senate floor before he officially retires from public office. Cullerton has been a Senator since 1991. He served in the House from 1979-1991.
