Carterville and Benton pick up wins at the Johnston City Girls 2A Basketball Regional

JOHNSTON CITY (WSIL) -- Carterville and Benton punched their tickets to Friday's Girls 2A Regional Finals in Johnston City.

Carterville held off Carmi-White County 56-39. It was a four point game in the third quarter, but then Megan Barton hit a short jumper to push the lead to six and the Lady Lions began to pull away. Abbey Crain hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to end the third quarter.

Barton led the Lions in scoring with 14 points. Alecia Doyle scored 13. Crain chipped in with 10 and Jeniah Thompson scored 9 points as Carterville just missed out on having four players in double-figure scoring.

In the other semifinal matchup, Benton knocked off Hamilton County 40-18.

Early on, Benton's Mady Wallance controlled the tempo of the game. Wallace scored 14 of her team's first 18 points.

Benton and Carterville will square off Friday at 7 PM in the Regional Final from Johnston City.
