CARBONDALE (WSIL) -- The SIU Board of Trustees has picked the next leader of the university's flagship campus.
Trustees tabbed Austin A. Lane after the former Texas Southern University President was recommended by SIU System President Dan Mahony.
"After calling people I trust in this field I think we made a great pick for Dr. Lane to join us and be a part of this team," said Mahony.
A leadership role is not new to Dr. Lane.
"I served as the president of Texas Sounthern University. I worked on the board."
Dr. Lane was removed from his position as president of TSU by the Board of Regents in February 2020. The board accused Lane of being connected to an admissions scandal involving thousands of dollars and an employee who was fired.
"I've always heard horror stories of the board turning against you, but I never thought it would have happened to me. It was a mess that was very public. I am trying not to get emotional...but I am."
Going forward, Lane says he'll try to make SIU better than ever before, with the help of staff members.
"You know you can never really accomplish things without the help of a great team."
Lane says some of his goals include boosting enrollment, having students commit to the university, and working on building relationships in the community.
"There's so much to do here. I am very excited to start working already. "
Lane’s appointment is effective July 6.
