CARBONDALE (WSIL) -- Recreational cannabis comes to Carbondale with the grand opening of Consume.

Dozens of people took part in a ribbon-cutting ceremony for Carbondale's first adult-use cannabis dispensary.

Consume opened its doors Friday morning in the historic Newell House on Main Street.

Carbondale Mayor Mike Henry took part in the ceremony and says the city is looking forward to an increase in traffic, as the new business becomes a destination for area 'consumers.'

"They've taken one of our grand old buildings and put a lot of money into it and renovated it. They have a beautiful space here. We're part of the coming legalization of recreational cannabis and we're proud to be in the forefront here in southern Illinois of that and looking forward to helping these folks succeed," said Mayor Henry.

Making good on his commitment, Mayor Henry was the first customer in line to make a purchase from the new location.

Customers can also place orders online for pickup or order from the menu on site.

Consume has locations in Chicago, Marion, and Quincy, Michigan.
