PADUCAH, Ky. (WSIL) -- A man is dead after leading police on a chase on the eve of his sentencing hearing.

57-year old John Parks pleaded guilty in February to charges that included possession of child pornography. He was scheduled to be sentenced Wednesday to 18 months in prison.

Last week, detectives found Parks looking to obtain fake documents and flee the area before his sentencing.

Investigators went to arrest Parks near Kentucky Oaks Mall on Monday, but when he refused, he entered his vehicle and drove off. Parks led police to a neighborhood near the corner of Court Avenue and Audubon Drive.

The sheriff's department says Parks stopped at a residence when deputies say they defended themselves against Parks' actions. Residents in the area tell News 3 they heard two gunshots. Parks was pronounced dead at the scene.

Other witnesses recalled seeing at least a dozen police cars in the area blocking off neighboring streets and remained on scene for several hours.

In February 2019 Parks was arrested on charges that included possession of child pornography. One year later, Parks pleaded guilty, setting up his sentencing date.

Parks' stepfather, who did not give his name, says his stepson was known as an avid fisherman and a former volunteer fishing coach at McCracken County High School.
