CARBONDALE, IL (WSIL) -- The Carbondale Warming Center is getting some much needed help thanks to a big grant.
The group, Housing Action Illinois, is awarding 145-thousand dollars to homeless service providers across the state.
That includes the warming center which will see a gift of $10,000 to $15,000.
These funds will be used to help people who are homeless or face housing instability get back on their feet.
The warming center, which is normally open from December through March, has stayed open to continue helping people during the Covid 19 pandemic.
Warming center board member, Carmalita Cahill, says these types of grants allow them to keep their doors open to help the community.
"I will say about two weeks ago, we did have a committee meeting and we were discussing that, if we were going to have to close our doors today on July 1st," said Cahill. "We had that meeting on Tuesday and on Friday we got a lot of good news and that allows us to keep going for at least another two months."
Cahill added, donations from local businesses and the community have also been a great help during this difficult time.
