Bruno the bear tranquilized; moved away from St. Louis Metro

ELSBERRY, Mo (WSIL) -- A bear that has gained national attention on a trek from Wisconsin to Missouri has been tranquilized and moved to a safer location after it was spotted Sunday in western suburbs of St. Louis.

The bear, nicknamed "Bruno" has nearly 150,000 Facebook fans as people from around the country have followed along the migrating young black bear's journey.

The Elsberry Police Department posted on Facebook:

"Just an update on the bear that passed through Elsberry July 1st. His name is Bruno and he was tranquilized by Conservation and moved away from the metro area for his safety and the public's."

Coming up Monday on News 3 at 6, we'll talk with the Missouri Department of Conservation about the state's growing bear population and if bears could be spotted in Southern Illinois.
