CARBONDALE (WSIL) -- Over the last several months, dozens of Carbondale residents have been the victims of mail theft.
Police say many of the victims had checks stolen from the mail. Those checks were forged, then cashed.
The Carbondale Police Department teamed up with investigators from the United States Office of Inspector General and the United States Postal Service to look into the thefts from U. S. Postal Service collection boxes.
Investigators say suspects in the case have been identified but have yet to be formally charged.
"We have identified suspects in this case. But at this time, due to this being an ongoing investigation, we are unable to identify them. But we hope to be able to do that in the near future," said Carbondale Police Investigation Commander Matt Dunning.
So far, more than 75 victims have been identified.
The investigation is ongoing, but authorities say the thefts themselves have been resolved.
"The mail thefts themselves have been resolved. The investigation into the forgery side of this and where those investigations have taken place, that continues to be ongoing," Dunning said.
