IHSA announcement still

CARTERVILLE (WSIL) -- At three o'clock Wednesday afternoon, we all learned that there will be a high school athletic season for the upcoming school year. The IHSA voted to create four seasons, fall, winter, spring and summer. Fall competitions will begin August 10 and the summer season will conclude June, 26, 2021. Football gets underway February 15, 2021 and runs through May 1, 2021. The WSIL sports team caught up with some local coaches and athletic directors to get their response to the announcement.

"I'm actually pretty excited," Carterville High School Head Football Coach and Athletic Director Brett Diel said. "The alternative was probably nothing at all and nobody is going to be for that. And to be honest with you, what I didn't want was a three week delay and in two weeks you are going to be delayed another three weeks and another three weeks. Go ahead and give us a little bit of separation and get us into the spring, it will be a little bit different but I think we can find some ways to motivate our kids in the fall and when we get out there in February in Southern Illinois, it can be pretty cold at that time. It's going to feel like football from the very beginning. I think it's going to be exciting, I think it's going to be a great opportunity for our kids and we are going to embrace it and make the most of it."

“Truthfully we are not going to change our mindset here in Marion," Marion High School Athletic Director Goodisky. "Our mindset all summer has been a day at a time and we just take it a day at a time and try to make the best of what we can do within the guidelines that are given to us. We’re blessed here at Marion to have a lot of adults, a lot of coaches that communicate and work really well together in terms of sharing athletes. From the beginning I think we all realized that we are all going to have to be even more flexible than years past to make sure that everybody has a great experience while they are trying to complete a season here at MHS.”
