CARBONDALE (WSIL) Emma and Arnie's Sandwiches on South Illinois Avenue welcomed back customers Saturday morning just a few days after having to temporarily close.

On Thursday afternoon, a SUV crashed through the restaurant's front window at lunch time.

The impact took out a facing bathroom wall and severely damaged a second bathroom and the furnace above the ceiling. Water also began to leak from the bathroom into the back stock room before they were able to shut the water off.

Owner Maria Lass previously told News 3 she was busy in the back fulfilling call-in orders when she heard the crash.

"I hear a very loud sound and I was like, 'What is that? That's not normal,'" Lass said on Thursday. "I walk out front, and there is a vehicle busted through our window."

No one was injured in the crash but an employee had been standing near where the vehicle entered the building.

Now, the front window is boarded up and caution tape sections off parts of the store that is damaged.

Lass says the health department approved the sandwich shop to reopen and she's just happy to be able to serve patrons again so quickly.

"Thank you all for all of your support, and your understanding, it means a lot to us," she explains. "Stuff happens, you know, but we're dealing with it."

Hours will be shortened from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. so the owners can work on repairs.

Currently, it's unclear what the official cause of the crash was determined to be by police, or if the driver faces any citations. News 3 reached out to Carbondale officials for comment and have not heard back.
