MARION (WSIL) -- There are plans underway to bring new businesses to Marion.

Near the intersection of Route 13 and Williamson County Parkway/Walton Way, construction is underway for new retail spaces and possibly new chain restaurants.

A developer bought the property in July, but breaking ground was delayed due to gathering permits. Now, he's moving forward with his plans.

"We're hoping that we have outlets on Route 13 for restaurants and other retail. Those lots are usually about two acres to one acre. And then we have a larger area to the south of Route 13 that we are hoping we can attract a big box retailer," said Doug Bradley, President of Marion Heights, LLC, the developer on the project.

Bradley says he can't release specific plans but tells News 3 there are contracts for a Popeye's Chicken and a Texas Roadhouse to locate to the area.

Bradley said he thinks the new businesses will be good for Marion.

"I think it could help Marion be more of a center for retail for all of Southern Illinois."
