CARBONDALE (WSIL) -- A local favorite garden celebrated an anniversary Friday.
Ten years ago, the College of Agriculture at SIU Carbondale put together a plan to install a Green Roof on campus.
The roof is covered in vegetation native to southern Illinois.
This continuous project has evolved over the years, inviting students across a variety of disciplines, to gain hands-on experience while making additions.
Friday, students and staff celebrated the Green Roof's 10-year anniversary and the promise it holds as a Hub for collaboration and innovation.
"We're all coming together because we believe in finding a more sustainable future, and yes, this is a small-scale project, but our impact on the world is going to be larger as time goes on through showcasing what students can do when they come together from different disciplines," says Nelson Fernandes, a senior and University Innovation Fellow.
Friday's celebration included both the current and original Dean who implemented the roof, the Director of Sustainability and the SIUC Chancellor.
