MURPHYSBORO (WSIL) -- A small group with the Murphysboro High School Key Club met Saturday morning for their annual highway cleanup day.
The group worked to pick up trash along a mile of Route 13, something they have done for the past 20 years. The occasion always falling on the 3rd Saturday of Septembers, which marks National Adopt a Highway Day.
Key Club President Amanda Rowland says members get the satisfaction of doing their part to make the community a better place. Saturday's cleanup totaled 20 bags of trash, but this is just a small part of what they do.
"We provide services for the community, whether it be for schools or organizations throughout our town," says Rowland. "And we help students in our high school gain leadership skills to better their future."
All the hard work did come with a reward, a lunch of hamburgers and hotdogs.
