MARION (WSIL)- It was a gorgeous and warm day to be out on the lake fishing. The 2021 Bass Fishing season opened this weekend with a tournament at Mack's Marina on Lake of Egypt. Today 14 teams headed out in hopes of catching he biggest bass of the day.
It was a tough day on the lake. Teams could bring in up to 4 fish to be weighed and combined for a total score, however only 4 boats came back with bass all with just a single fish. Nathan Vanek and his team from Platte City, Missouir and their 2.47 pound bass took first place. Vienna's team was represented bringing back one fish and Jack Stephens a future member of the McKendree Bass Fishing team took second. I spoke with Stephens about preparing for the colligate level and Benton's Laindree Richardson on females in the sport.
"Every tournament is a good prep for later in life," said Stephens. " More time on the water is more success in my opinion. I'm excited. All this stuff adds up to being a better angler and really just more time on the water is better for anybody who wants to go further in fishing."
"It's definitely a privilege because over the years, you've definitely seen more females join into the playing field and its kind of just fun being able to become friends and get to talk and see other people as the same gender as you get to fish," said Richardson.
