BENTON (WSIL) -- A house fire in Benton caused an oxygen tank to explode. Nearby residents felt and heard the explosion from blocks away.

The Benton Fire Chief says firefighters were called to the 100 block of East Smith Street around 7:30 Saturday morning.

When they arrived they found a woman laying on the sidewalk and heavy smoke coming out of the home.

Abbott EMS took the woman to a local a hospital while crews from West City and West Frankfort were called in to help.

Extreme heat and pressure caused the oxygen tank to explode but firefighters were able to get the blaze under control in just thirty minutes.

The state fire Marshal is investigating the cause of the fire.
