SPRINGFIELD, MO (WSIL) -- Notre Dame (Cape Girardeau) boys soccer was 16-1 entering the Missouri Class 3 state championship, but Friday night they met their match.
Fort Zumwalt South won their second state championship in three years with a 3-0 win over Notre Dame.
Karson Gibbs had two goals and an assist in the victory. The junior scored his 48 and 49th goals of the season, giving his 85 for his career.
Brendan Owens had the other goal for the Bulldogs.
The play of the game came with about 15 minutes left in the contest, and Notre Dame with an opportunity to make it a 2-1 game. Notre Dame received a penalty kick when Fort Zumwalt South keeper Luke Dillon received a yellow card. State rules require him to come out of the game, so enter Evan Baisch. Baisch comes in and is asked to make a save on Will Dodson, who has 34 goals on the season, and Baisch delivered with the save.
