GRAND RIVERS, KY. (WSIL) -- It's only a few days into December but the holiday spirit is already alive at Patti's 1880's Settlement, which is holding its free Festival of Lights event.

Ann Martin, who is the Co-CEO of Patti's, says they had humble beginnings going back nearly four decades ago.

"We started in 1977 as a hamburger and ice cream parlor, and have built from the ground up," she explains.

They've now expanded to multiple restaurants, shops, a hotel as well as a bed and breakfast, and a place that offers mini golf.

Those who visit during the holidays can grab some hot chocolate and stroll the gardens nightly that have been transformed into a winter wonderland.

There's more than a million lights, dozens of decorated Christmas trees with ornaments and ribbons, and nativity scenes.

Crews begin putting up the decorations after Labor Day, so they can be ready for the annual event.

Santa and Mrs. Claus will also make socially-distanced appearances throughout the month every Thursday through Sunday from 4 to 8 p.m.

"We have a couple of other characters we are brining to the weekends," Martin says. "Just to change it up and keep the Santa line hoppin', so people have somebody to talk to while they're waiting in line."

Families can take a horse and carriage throughout the town with rides starting at 4 p.m.

Martin says they're happy to be open during this time so families can enjoy all the festivities this year just as they have during past holidays.

"It's making memories with their families," she explains. "The kids are now the adults and are brining their kids back for traditions."

Martin adds that she hopes new visitors can also do the same and become familiar faces.

While indoor dining is restricted in the state through December 13th, meals can still be for ordered for patio dining, take-out or delivery.

Some favorites are also sold at the outdoor cafe like the hot chocolate, pork chop sandwich, BBQ sandwich and nachos. The cafe is open from 2-8 p.m. each day except for Tuesday and Wednesday when the hours are extended from noon to 8 p.m.

For anyone who needs to check some items off their gift list, the shops are open and a mask is required. Many items can also be purchased online.

More information can be found on the website for Patti's 1880's Settlement or its Facebook page.

Patti's 1880's Settlement is open daily from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
