Autopsy: inmate at Cape County Justice Center died from cardiac arrest

CAPE GIRARDEAU (WSIL) -- An inmate's death at the Cape County Justice Center has been ruled as cardiac arrest.

The Cape Girardeau County Sheriff's Office was notified by an inmate that his cellmate was unresponsive, January 16.

Staff administered medical aid until medical personnel arrived and took over. The inmate was pronounced dead at the jail.

An autopsy performed Tuesday, January 19, 2021, pending a toxicology report, determined the inmate died from cardiac arrest.

Sheriff Ruth Ann Dickerson said in a release, "The care and custody of those housed in our facility is a momentous responsibility not taken lightly. Passing from natural causes is not something that can be predicted or prevented. Our condolences go out to the inmate’s family."
