(WSIL) -- Gas prices nationally are on the rise.
That's according to a new study by AAA.
Since January 1st, gas prices have gone up on average 16 cents per gallon in Illinois, 17 cents in Missouri, and 14 cents in Kentucky.
The rise in prices can be attributed to American and Canadian oil companies waiting to see the new administration's policies on oil, as well as overseas companies adjusting prices as they would be pre-pandemic.
"Throughout the pandemic, drivers kinda have had the courtesy of lower gas prices, historically low gas prices. And now we are kinda seeing them return to pre-pandemic levels," said AAA's St. Louis spokesperson Nick Chabarria.
Gas prices are expected to keep rising, so it's recommended to fill up sooner rather than later.
