CHICAGO (HOI) — The Illinois Department of Health’s top doctor announced Friday regions in Phase 4 can resume intra-conference play in high school sports.
As of Friday, Jan. 22, that includes Regions 3, 5 and 6.
Dr. Ngozi Ezike said these regions are now able to play competitive basketball and resume practices.
According to the IDPH’s website, regions in Phase 4 will be able to play at “Level 3” for higher-risk sports, such as basketball, wrestling and football. This means intra-conference play or inter-league play is allowed.
However, state championships will only be allowed for lower-risk sports under “Level 3.”
The Illinois High School Association previously published guidance for how and when prep sports can resume. A tweet from the organization suggests the guidelines will be updated Friday.
