Driver fleeing traffic stop causes multi-vehicle crash in Williamson County

WILLIAMSON COUNTY, Ill. (WSIL) -- A driver fleeing a traffic stop in Williamson County Friday afternoon, caused a three vehicle crash.

Illinois State Police say just before 3 p.m. a Herrin Police Officer observed 40-year-old James McKee commit an Illinois Vehicle Code violation.

The officer initiated a traffic stop and McKee sped away. The Herrin officer ended the pursuit.

After fleeing, McKee was southbound on Route 148 when he entered the intersection with Route 13 ignoring a red light. He struck an eastbound Chevrolet Malibu, pushing it into another vehicle.

McKee was uninjured but his passenger, 35-year-old Mallory Martin and the driver of the Malibu, 22-year-old Lauren Walker, were transported to local hospitals with non-life threatening injuries.

McKee was issued citations for Driving While License Revoked, Disobeying a Traffic Control Device, Failure to Reduce Speed to Avoid a Crash, and Failure to Yield Turning Left. 

Herrin Police Department is investigating the pre-crash events and no further information is available from the Illinois State Police.
