Interstate 57 crash

UPDATE: 4:30 P.M.

Illinois State Police say they responded to a crash involving multiple vehicles on Interstate 57, north of Mt. Vernon at milepost 103, around 9:30 a.m. in a single lane construction zone.

ISP says a vehicle spun out in the roadway and a semi stopped to avoid hitting it. While stopped, the semi was rear ended by another semi, which was subsequently rear ended by another semi.

The second crash occurred at the same location when a passenger vehicle stopped to avoid the first crash and was rear ended by a second vehicle, which was then rear ended by a third vehicle.

The roadway was closed for approximately 3 hours during the crash investigation.
