BENTON (WSIL) -- Benton firefighters want to do their part to help their community.

They teamed up with the city of Benton and United Way of South Central Illinois to give out 400 boxes of food to those in need.

The Benton fire chief tells News 3 cars started lining up as early as 7:30 a.m. and by 10 a.m. nearly 100 cars were in line.

"I've got a great group of guys and gals here. They're willing and able to come out here on a Monday morning to make sure we can get food out. It's been very successful for our community and so we're excited about once again being able to offer the residents who need a little extra help some help." says Shane Cockrum, Benton Fire Chief.

This is the fourth mobile food giveaway hosted by the department in the last few months.

Over that time they've given away more than 1-thousand boxes of food.
The department plans to host another give-away in the next couple of months.
