CHARLESTON, MO (WSIL) -- A complete renovation means students in Missouri finally have their gymnasium back.
P.E., basketball, and volleyball can now return to Charleston Middle School.
An air conditioner leak left the floor with serious water damage last spring.
The leak caused the already aging floor to buckle and that left a dangerous hole.
After a lengthy process of replacing the entire AC system and gym floor students and faculty alike say they are excited to break it in this week.
"They were more than ready. I would get questions probably daily, 'When are we going to be able to use the gym?' Also from our PE coaches, 'When are we going to be able to use the gym?' 'When are we going to be able to use the gym?'", says Principal, Danielle Staple.
"It just becomes a nightmare for everybody that's involved, so we're just excited to have the gym floor back, and then the bonus on top of it is that it just looks beautiful," Athletic Director, Michael Minner.
Students had P.E. classes either outside or in the cafeteria commons area during repairs. Because of COVID, students have been eating lunch in their classrooms, which in turn has freed up the space for a restricted gym class.
