CARTERVILLE (WSIL) -- John A. Logan College students have successfully installed six, emergency call boxes throughout campus in a student-led project.
Work-Force Development students poured the footing for the 14-foot call boxes, and I.T. and Criminal Justice students installed the software.
Public Safety Interim Director Stan Diggs says, Call Boxes lets a person call Campus Police with a push of a button if help is needed.
"This is part of our strategic plan to upgrade the security and safety levels here at the college, so this is just one-more layer that we put in place in that process," says Diggs.
Call Boxes are paid for through a grant, which required the project be completed by students. Towers are solar-powered and connected to dispatch through satellite and cellular communication networks.
The Boxes are installed in busy areas, and when activated, trigger surveillance cameras for extra security.
