WEST FRANKFORT, Ill. (WSIL) -- COVID-19 cases are consistently low in West Frankfort and because of that the city's mayor completely supports the CDC's decision to ease the mask-wearing.

Mayor Tom Jordan says the CDC is on the right track. He says he thinks now is a better time than ever to let Americans drop the masks when they feel it's appropriate.

"I think we have to stand up and say hey listen I'm not sure the government has the right to tell me what to do as far as wearing a mask or not. And I know people are going to disagree with that but I still live in a free country. I still have rights and if we don't defend our rights, we could lose them," said Mayor Jordan.

There are times he said, like so many others, we should use good judgment and cover our faces, especially those who have been vaccinated.

"If you've been vaccinated, I don't think you need to wear a mask. That's my personal opinion and I think that's what the CDC is saying. Basically outside, it just troubles me to see these little kids, even the high school kids doing sports with masks on," said Mayor Jordan.

And that's exactly how Sammy Steinsultz feels, he said, if someone is in poorer health, he thinks its best to think about what's best for them, even if it'll make you a bit uncomfortable.

"Depends on the situation. I mean like us, we can take our mask off. I was just in a place a while ago talking to a lady who was pregnant I thought it was nice to keep it on for her benefit. Not for mine," said Steinsultz.

Mayor Jordan said he will always honor anyone's request to put on a mask if they ask him to put one on to make them feel more comfortable.
