(WSIL) -- Memorial Day is May 31, 2021 and local communities are working to honor those who died while serving our country.
Anna: Ceremony at Carroll P Foster VFW Post 3455 at 11 a.m.
Carbondale: 10 a.m. Honor Guard flag raising ceremony followed by rifle salute. Immediately following from 10 a.m. until noon, there will be a self-guided walking tour through historic Woodlawn Cemetery, marked by brief biographies of some of the notable veterans displayed near their headstones.
Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or come prepared to stand during the flag service.
Those who are not comfortable in attending this service are encouraged to join in the observation of the National Moment of Remembrance at 3:00 p.m., with a minute of silent reflection on those who have given their life in service to the nation.
Carterville: Placing flags on graves of Veterans in the Carterville City Cemetery Thursday, May 27.
Flags and plaques for over 400 veterans to be placed at the Military Salute in Cannon Park Saturday, May 29, at 7 a.m.
Du Quoin: Flags will be placed on graves in Sunfield at Sunset Cemetery and in old Du Quoin Cemetery Friday, May 28, at 10 a.m.
Du Quoin VFW Post 513 will hold a Memorial Day service Sunday at 11 a.m. at the post
Harrisburg: 10 a.m. "Little Arlington" Memorial service inside Sunset Lawns Cemetery off of McHaney Road.
A free spaghetti luncheon provided by the American Legion [600 E. Logan Street, Harrisburg, IL 62946] will follow the service for veterans, their families, and first responders.
The event will also be live-streamed on Facebook and can be found on the “Harrisburg, Illinois - Gateway to the Shawnee National Forest” page.
Herrin: 9 a.m. at the Doughboy Statue
Johnston City: 9 a.m. wreath laying ceremony at veterans memorial near Legence bank.
Marion: 11:30 a.m. at Rose Hill cemetery
Mt. Vernon: Service at the north side of the courthouse square at 10 a.m.
Local WWII veteran will be honored ahead of his 100th birthday by Mayor, former lawmaker, current lawmakers and a proclamation letter from the Governor will be read in his honor.
Vienna: Vienna Carnegie Library at 11 a.m. sponsored by Daniel Chapman DAR and the Beggs-Gurley VFW post.
Cape Girardeau: Memorial Day Weekend at Fort D, 920 Fort Street; Local re-enactors will honor the memory of veterans past and present May 29-31
Perryville: Wreath laying ceremony at Missouri Veterans Wall at 2 p.m.
Sikeston: Ceremony at Sikeston Veterans Park at 10:30 a.m.
Paducah: Lunch for veterans, their families and first responders at VFW Post 1191 from 12-3:30 p.m.
