CARBONDALE, Ill (WSIL) -- Bikers in Carbondale will soon have another way to safely get around town.

The city received a $2 million grant from I-DOT to build a new bike path. That path will extend the current path from Old Route 13 to Wood Road along Route 13. That's about 1.8 miles of new trail. Officials say it is another safe way for bikers to travel around the region.

"This is part of a more regional effort to connect the towns of Murphysboro, Carbondale, Carterville, Crainville, and Marion. Every little bit we get to be part of that plan is that much further along to connecting the whole region." says Molly Maxwell, Planner for City of Carbondale.

Jackson County also received a grant to expand the Saluki Greenway from Airport Road to Country Club Road.
