CARBONDALE, Ill. (WSIL) -- Southern Illinois University-Carbondale is offering prizes and giveaways for students who get vaccinated before the fall semester.

The university is offering a variety of incentives including gift cards and redeemable vouchers for students who upload their vaccination information through its 'Protect The Pack' program.

So far around 600 students have submitted their vaccine information, according to dean of students Jennifer Jones-Hall. Jones-Hall says she's received only two complaints from parents about the program and hardly any from students.

"I think our students have also learned that being placed in isolation and quarantine is not a fun experience," Hall-Jones said. "They want the college experience and our students are going to Protect the Pack by getting vaccinated."

The money for those prizes came from leftover funds that the school received through the American Rescue Plan, Jones-Hall said.

The university's first drawing happens August 27. The school also announced that it would require masks indoors after the CDC changed course this week. Illinois is also adopting the CDC's new recommendation.
