PADUCAH, KENTUCKY (WSIL) -- Police arrested a man after his girlfriend was fatally shot during an argument.
According to a press release from authorities, the incident took place Just after 1:00 a.m. Sunday morning. Officers responded to the 1600 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. for a report of someone who had been shot.
After arriving to the scene, officers found the victim, later identified as Sallie Newton, who had been injured from an apparent gunshot wound. Officers gave aid to Newton before she was transported by ambulance to a local hospital, where she died from her injuries.
Paducah Police detectives also responded to the scene to investigate the incident, and found that Newton and her boyfriend, Justin Davis, had been arguing while driving along Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.
After pulling over to the side of the road, Davis and Newton continued to argue. In an interview with detectives, Davis stated he retrieved a handgun, pointing it at himself as well as Newton during the argument.
During this time, Davis also told detectives both he and Newton struggled over the gun as it was pointed at Newton, and the gun discharged, striking Newton.
Davis is charged with Murder (Domestic Violence) and was lodged in the McCracken County Jail.
