(WSIL) -- Construction crews are repairing the Crab Orchard Lake spillway. It's been 32 years since the lake was last lowered for maintenance.
The heavy equipment has been moved in and crews have started removing the top 18 inches of concrete from the dam. Officials say the project will take place in two parts. After removing the concrete and refilling it on one side, crews will move on to the other.
"It's actually going very well. They're a little bit ahead of schedule, then what they thought but there's always little hiccups that happen but they're moving along very well they think," says Neil Vincent, Refuge Visitor Services Manager.
Vincent adds the project is expected to be finished by mid-January.
